Built In Termite Invite

I am a Realtor not a home inspector, so I love all the information we get about a house. Things that can be wrong or go wrong. Home buyers and sellers can benefit from it.

When first walking around the rear of a house, I saw a shed.  At first glance it looked home made but okay!

Well, so then I noticed the collapsing roof.

… And the wood siding that is right on the ground, a big no no.

… And that it wasn’t touching the house so lots of water would be getting inside.

… And that the door doesn’t close properly, or even open very well.

But ASIDE from all that, hey, we have a shed!

I’m thinking garden tools, lawn mower, weed whacker, that sort of thing!

So I looked inside!

Well, none of the above!  It is full of wood, all sorts of wood!  And that wood is getting wet, all sorts of wet!

Wet and wood are a bad combination to have beside the house!  What better to attract termites!  You might say, “Yeah, but it’s right up against a solid concrete foundation wall, so that’s okay!”

Um, NO!!  A termite needs only 1/64th of an inch to get in!  Can you guarantee that such a crack is not behind that pile?  Or guarantee that some little fellow hasn’t gotten in between the foundation wall and slab?  And inside the house at this point is a finished basement wall.  Can you guarantee that termites are not munching away behind the drywall?

Neither can I…

Are termites present here?  Well, I randomly grabbed a piece of wood and behold and lo!  It is a buffet!

THIS IS A TERMITE FACTORY!  THIS IS A TERMITE INVITE!

There may be more termites in and under this pile of wood, all attracted there by this fine, and free*, buffet than there are humans on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States!

NEVER pile wood near the house!

My recommendation:  Anything piled next to a house, regardless of foundation type, be it wood, stones, bricks, patio pavers, or even mulch (!), can attract termites right beside the house.  Why would anyone want to do that?

Sooo, don’t do it!

* Wow, who says there’s no such thing as a free lunch!  And now that I think about it, was that a Warren Buffet or a Jimmy Buffet?
