San Salvador used to be named Guanahani by the Arawak people when the came over from South America between 1000 and 1300 A.D. Christopher Columbus landed on October 12, 1492 on an island in the Caribbean's, which historians agree that he landed on the island of San Salvador. The meaning of the name he bestowed on the Island is Holy Savior. The journal entry he made about San Salvador is "the beauty of these islands surpasses that of any other and as much as the day surpasses the night in splendour".
